The Shawshank Redemption is by far one of the most rated and fan-favorite prison movies to date. Released in 1994, it has been nominated for various types of awards, including Oscars, and has won a good bunch of them.

The story centers on two prison inmates, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Ellis Boyd Redding (Morgan Freedom) who become friends while serving time in prison, the ups and downs of prison life, and how Andy finally manages to escape, having directed Redd on how to find him if he eventually gets out of prison.

The Platform

The Platform is a Netflix original film released in 2019, it’s a mixture of Sci-fi, horror, and thriller all brought together to make up one of the best prison-inspired movies you can find on Netflix right now.

The film is set in a vertical prison system with one cell per level, and two inmates in a cell. Only one food platform, and two minutes per day to feed. The residents at the top cells get to feed as much as they want, with each level getting only the leftovers from the previous ones.

Miracle in Cell No. 7

Miracle in Cell No. 7 is a movie that will leave you with mixed emotions of both happiness and sadness as the film travels down a storyline of a mentally derailed father who was wrongly accused of killing a general’s only daughter, which earns him a death sentence by hanging and is afterward thrown in prison while waiting for the day of his execution.

He later found love in the prison from his fellow cell inmates, and later goes ahead to escape when one of the inmates decides to hang on the rope in his place.

Papillon (2017)

Papillon is a remake of the 1973 movie with the same title, which in return, was also based on the international best-selling autobiographical books “Papillon” and “Banco”.

The film follows the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a Paris safecracker who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with quirky convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape.
