With the launch of the Tecno Phantom X phone, it seems Tecno is finally ready to pull out its big guns, and go head to head with the big guys in the industry, especially the likes of Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, etc.

So, what do we have here? Well, it’s Tecno’s first premium device and one that actually looks promising. To start with, it has what now has been generally accepted as a trademark for premium flagship devices, an OLED display with curved edges, one that refreshes at a rate of 90Hz, and the resolution peaking at 1080p (Full HD+).

The phone absolutely looks stunning with that curved screen, something that we have never seen on a Tecno phone before.

Oh! Did I tell you that this phone is actually packing a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both its front and back? Yes, the Tecno Phantom X is actually made of glass on both the front and the back, which is another mark of a premium device.

And it also happens to be one of the slimmest, sleekest, and most comfortable to hold Tecno smartphone to be made after a very long time now, measuring 163.5 mm in height, 73.8 mm across (width), and 8.7 mm in thickness. All thanks to the curved display.

The Samsung Galaxy S phones used to take this crown in the past, but since the company have started flattening the curved edges on these phones recently, well, it seems Tecno is about to fill up that space.

And the cameras too, are something that I can bet that absolutely no one was expecting to be seen on a Tecno mobile smartphone. We’re talking of a 50MP large 1/1.3 Inches sensor, the sensor has Dual Pixel and Laser auto-focus, and sits behind an f/1.85 lens.

Accompanying it is a 13MP 50mm focal length Telephoto camera sensor with 2x optical zooming capabilities, and lastly is an 8MP 120ยบ field of view ultra-wide sensor.

While on the front is a combo made of a 48MP main camera sensor, and an 8MP ultrawide sensor, with both etched into a pill-shaped cutout, and pushed to the top left position of the phone’ screen.

So, you see, no low-light AI camera jargon here, and those useless macro and depth sensors are not in sight too.

The phone’s fingerprint reader is hidden under the display, and it’s of the optical type, and Tecno claims that this sensor can unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds.

Now, let us address the elephant in the room, which is the processor powering this phone. So, at the helms of affairs of the Tecno Phantom X is a Mediatek Helio G95 chipset, which is paired with 8 Gigabytes of RAM, and 256 Gigabytes of internal storage capacity.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the Helio G95 is a great chipset, and one that has proven its worth especially in phones like the recently announced Tecno Camon 17 Pro, which derives joy in beating phones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro with a Snapdragon 732G chipset, and the Samsung Galaxy A52 with a SD720G chipset in various speed test run by various tech reviewers on YouTube.

But, for a device that is to be positioned and marketed as a premium device, at least, something from the Mediatek Dimensity lineup wouldn’t hurt anyone, and that was absolutely what everyone expecting Tecno to do, but no, they missed that chance of producing one device that is great, both in and out.

The phone comes fitted with a 4,700 mAh battery with the charging speed kicking at 33W, and Tecno claims this can resurrect and fill the Phantom X dead battery up to 70% with just 30 mins of charging.

So, in conclusion, I will say that the Phantom X is a really great device and one that really has a lot of potentials. But I fear that this phone will really not make a lot of sales as much it is grabbing lots and lots of attention on the internet, because;

  • Tecno is not really known for making premium flagship device, not ones that will cost up to 150,000 to 180,000NGN, so I bet that if this phone is priced up to that amount, a lot of people will simply choose a Xiaomi or Samsung instead, because they’ll feel it’s not worth spending such amount on a Tecno phone.
  • The Phantom X is still gonna run Tecno’s HiOS UI, which is one UI that many people have come to realize not only that it looks cheap, but at the same time, you’re being bombarded with ads from the left, right, and center, which is not something that premium smartphones are known for. So, you see, one more reason why people will choose to go for Xiaomi or Samsung instead, if the Phantom X happens to be priced up to 150,000NGN.
  • Tecno has never been known to push software updates or new android version updates to its smartphones, not even for once. So, how can I buy a phone worth up to that amount, and be stuck with one shitty software, and an obsolete android version all my life?

So, you see, the Tecno Phantom X is a very great smartphone on paper, but what of in real life use? Will people be willing to invest their money in a premium and expensive Tecno smartphone?

Tell us what you think about this by leaving a comment for us in the comments section below, and as always, I’ll see you all tomorrow, #peace out.

  1. This is actually what Infinix was working on with the Infinix Zero X smartphone which is rumored to launch soon too. But, seeing that both Infinix and Tecno are from the same parent company, I wouldn’t say that one party copied the other.
