Picus Labs recently shared an analysis after conducting 136 million simulated cyber-attacks, indicating that macOS is actually less likely to be more secure than Windows and Linux.
This weakness was attributed to insufficient efforts from security personnel whose job is to make these Apple devices safer to use.
While macOS could only defend against 23% of the attacks, Windows and Linux successfully countered 62% and 65% respectively.
Apple devices are often seen as immune devices due to their manufacturer’s renowned capabilities. Most people seeking secure devices and willing to invest in top quality typically opt for either an iPhone or a MacBook running macOS. However, this assumption is now about to be debunked globally.

The Mistake of Security Teams While Managing MacOS
Co-founder and CTO of Picus Security, Volkan Ertürk, mentioned that security teams are not investing enough in protecting computers running MacOS.
While Macs are often thought to be less vulnerable, our findings suggest that security teams are not allocating adequate resources to protect these systems.
He later mentioned that using the Picus Threat Library would help organizations in better defend macOS against cyber threats.
Threat repositories, like the Picus Threat Library, are armed with the latest and most prominent macOS specific threats to help organizations streamline their validation and mitigation efforts.
Another shocking discovery by Picus Security was that out of 100% of the simulated attacks, only 56% were detected, while 26% were reported. Furthermore, just 9% of theft attempts were blocked.
Though macOS continues to prove itself safer than Windows, the widespread mismanagement by security outfits may decrease its appeal to the uninformed. But what people truly need are security teams that don’t assume macOS requires less protection.
One of the advantages of macOS is its smaller user base compared to Windows. While hackers have infected devices running macOS with malware in the past, Windows has been shown to receive more malicious attacks.
In conclusion, macOS is not less secure than Windows and Linux, just more overrated.
