The Plot

In 1954, Hamid Iqbal is in charge of the Pakistan Army and wants to get back at Tara Singh for killing forty soldiers when he tried to escape from there with his wife Sakeena and boy Jeete. He makes Ashraf Ali pay by having him killed because he helped Tara go away into India’s safety zone.

Fast forward to 1971, Tara now supplies goods to the Indian Army cantonment and lives with Sakeena and Jeete. When Lt. Colonel Devendra Rawat asks for Tara’s help supplying Indian soldiers during the Third India–Pakistan War, trouble brews.

Iqbal spots Tara, causing an explosion at the border, leading to many soldiers being captured. Jeete returns to find Sakeena devastated. Upon discovering Tara’s disappearance, Jeete goes against everyone’s advice and heads to Pakistan to rescue his father.

In Pakistan, Jeete meets Tara’s friend Gul Khan, secures a job, and befriends Kurban Khan’s daughter, Muskaan. Jeete infiltrates the prison, only to discover Tara was never captured.

Meanwhile, Tara, who fell into a stream and was rescued by a Bakarwal tribe, decides to rescue Jeete upon learning of his son’s capture.

In Pakistan, Tara meets Gul Khan, learns of Jeete’s capture, and rescues him from Iqbal and his army. Yahya Khan, who’s the President of Pakistan and also the Commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Army, tells Iqbal to catch Tara in the next 72 hours.

Tara’s team, including Sakeena, faces challenges but eventually reunites. They attempt to leave Pakistan when Muskaan and Kurban Khan’s family, planning to move to Balochistan, join them.

Kurban Khan proposes that Tara accept Muskaan as Jeete’s bride, and both Tara and Jeete happily agree. However, Iqbal ambushes them, killing Muskaan’s brother Farid. The next day, Tara battles Iqbal and his army alone, escaping with everyone in a battle tank.

At the Indian border, Iqbal attempts to kill Tara but is shot by Indian soldiers. Colonel Rawat approves Jeete’s enlistment in the army, and Tara, Jeete, and Muskaan reunite with Sakeena.

Critical Response

On the Rotten Tomatoes website, only 17% of the 12 critics’ reviews gave a thumbs up, and the average rating stands at 4.2/10.

Taran Adarsh rated the movie 4.5/5 stars, stating, “Gadar 2 is top-notch desi entertainment. Sunny Deol’s return to the big screen is powerful, and he maintains his ferocious intensity.

The patriotic theme, combined with nostalgic elements, ensures it will be a big hit. Gadar 2 fulfills high expectations, offering drama, emotions, action, the reprised songs, and, of course, the iconic hand pump sequence.

Anil Sharma ensures he includes every element for a blockbuster.” Anuj Kumar from The Hindu remarked, “While not as provocative as the original, Anil Sharma opts for a middle ground. Perhaps, the subdued tone is a response to the heightened socio-political atmosphere outside the theater compared to the original’s release in 2001.

However, it’s commendable that Sharma has toned down the jingoistic aspect.” Film critic and trade analyst Komal Nahta described “Gadar 2” as “not just a film but a celebration, evoking emotions that resonate with every Indian.” Anindita Mukherjee of India Today gave it 3.5/5 stars, noting, “Gadar 2 surpasses expectations, successfully pulling at your heartstrings, with Sunny Paaji shouldering the emotional load.”

Monika Rawal Kukreja from Hindustan Times mentioned, “Gadar 2 falters in terms of story and pacing but brings back the mass entertainment factor, making it a value-for-money watch.” Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, with a 1.5/5 stars rating, commented, “Sunny paaji still delivers a powerful performance, and his iconic ‘dhai-kilo-ka-haath’ retains its impact. And also, the hand pump makes a comeback.”

The end credits tease a “to be continued,” sparking excitement among fans for a potential sequel. When asked about it, Anil Sharma hinted at future plans, stating, “You’ll need to be patient. The fruit of patience is sweet, just like Gadar 2. Ideas have emerged, and Shaktimaan Ji (the writer) and I are considering various possibilities. So, stay tuned for what’s to come.”
