Overview

Okay, so for starters, Jumia is an online marketplace or store like every other online store out there on the internet, and there’s no doubt that Jumia has grown to become one of the biggest and most trusted online marketplaces not just in Nigeria alone, but in Africa as a whole.

But being one of the biggest and most trusted doesn’t mean one shouldn’t be careful enough when ordering products on the platform, because, in an actual sense, Jumia doesn’t own any of the products that are being sold on the platform.

They only provided a means for sellers to meet buyers easily, so, if you’re not being careful enough, you’re most likely going to end up buying any one of the three types of products;

  • Either products that are defective;
  • or products that don’t look anything like what you saw on the product listing page before you placed your order;
  • Or, products that are just outright fake out of the box, especially those ordering for hairs, clothes and clothing accessories, and sometimes, electronics.

But if you follow these 4 tips and steps which I’ll be listing shortly and discussing on this page, you can rest be assured that anything you order on the platform will only be genuine or original products, straight from their respective official vendors or stores, or from any other genuine and trusted vendor on the platform.

And without further ado, let’s get started. #enjoy.

But wait.

Before we begin, I want to believe that you already have a Jumia account, and you know the basics of shopping on the platform like searching for products, and how to filter them based on your given criteria or preferences, such as color, price, brand, size (for wearables), etc.

So, if you do know all that, I’ll just go straight to the points one after the other and try to hit the nail on the head in the shortest possible time.

So, before we begin, here are the four tips I’ll be showing you today to enable you to filter out the bad products from the good ones on the Jumia platform.

  1. Buy only from the Jumia official stores whenever possible, as doing this will give you a sense of trust and relaxation that you’re buying this product direct from their respective manufacturers.
  2. Sort products based on “Rating“.
    • By doing this, you’ll first see products with the most sales and highest number of rating and customer reviews, and with this, you’ll know if a product is worth buying or not, based on other people’s experiences.
  3. Thirdly, try as much as possible to buy products that are being shipped within your home country, and avoid products that are tagged “Shipped from abroad“.
  4. And lastly, I will teach you how to filter products based on a “seller score” and overall seller rating which includes the number of successful sales they’ve had, and how long they’ve been selling on the platform.

So, once again, and without further ado, let’s get started. #enjoy.

How to order products on Jumia: A step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Buy only from official Jumia stores whenever possible.

There are lots of vendors selling the same product on the Jumia online marketplace, but to make sure you’re buying from the right store or vendor, and that you’re buying the original product, I always advise people to buy products that are marked “Official Store” by Jumia whenever it is possible.

How to order on Jumia

It’s not all products that get the official store label, but you’ll mostly find them on products from more recognized and reputable brands such as Infinix, Tecno, Samsung, Adidas, Casio, Indomie, etc.

And you can follow the link below to see all the current official stores that are available on the Jumia platform today.

See Now: List of all Jumia official stores and brands.

So, how do you make sure that you’re buying or ordering from a Jumia official store?

Well, it’s simple;

The first method is; you can either follow the link I gave above to see the list of all the currently available Jumia official stores and from there, you can simply tap/click on anyone you want to start shopping right there, or;

If you have a product brand in mind that you want to buy from, say something like a “Samsung” product, simply type the name of the brand in the search area provided for you at the top of the Jumia website or app, and from the quick drop-down results, the one representing the official store is usually differentiated with a logo of the brand beside it as you can see from the screenshot below.

Step 2: Sort products based on rating.

Now, assuming that we couldn’t find what we’re looking for from any of the available Jumia official stores, that’s where the second step comes in.

So, the first thing you should do is to filter or sort the said products based on “product rating“.

Doing this will first show you products that have the highest number of ratings and customer reviews within a given category, and these are usually the most sold products inside that category or product listing page.

So, this will give you an insight or idea of what other people who have bought the same product are saying about it, and from there, you can judge the originality and ingenuity of a product based on those reviews.

To sort products based on rating, all you have to do is;

For those accessing Jumia on a computer or desktop browser;

  • When you’re on a particular category or product listing page, say something like “Laptops“.
  • At the top right hand side of the page, you should see a button that says “Sort by“.
  • By default, the option is set to sort by “Popularity“.
  • Simply change that to sort by “Product Rating“.

While for those accessing Jumia via the Jumia mobile shopping app on a smartphone;

  • When you’re in a particular category or product listing page, say something like “Laptops“.
  • You should see a drop-down button at the top of the page, with a label “POPULARITY“.
  • Tap on the button, and change the option to “BEST RATING“.
Change “Popularity” to “Best Rating”.

So, having done this, and like I said before, you should first start seeing products with the highest number of ratings and customer reviews, and all you have to do is take your time to go through some of these reviews to know what other people who have bought the product are saying about it before placing your order.

Step 3: Filter products based on where they’re shipped from.

If you’re in Nigeria, I’ll advise that you filter products based on products that are shipped from Nigeria. Though most times, products that are marked “Shipped from abroad” are usually way cheaper than the ones shipped from your home country, and most times too, they’re usually the fake ripoff of their original counterparts, being the reason why they’re extra cheap to attract vulnerable shoppers.

For an instance, you might see a Samsung Galaxy phone that costs over a 100k+ or 200k+ nairas from a seller in Nigeria, being sold for half the price from a seller abroad, and for a product like that, there can only be a possibility of one of the two outcomes;

Either the phone is a refurbished Samsung phone, or it’s just outright fake. Period.

You should only use the “Shipped from abroad” option if a particular product or product type you’re looking for isn’t sold or readily available in your home country.

And as for those in other countries like Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, etc, I’m pretty sure that you should also see the option to sort products based on where they’re being shipped from on your Jumia mobile application, or website.

And to apply this filter, all you have to do is;

For those on a computer or desktop browser;

  • On a product category or listing page, at the left side of the page, you should see some options that moves along with you as you scroll down the page, I call them the product filtering options.
  • Now keep scrolling down the page while keeping your eyes on those options until you see the option that says “Shipped from“.
  • Now, from there and depending on your location, select the option that says shipped from your home country, for example, “Shipped from Nigeria“.

While for those using the Jumia mobile app on their smartphones;

  • While viewing a product category or product listing page, at the top of your phone’s screen, you should see the “FILTER” button.
  • Tap on it and look for the “Shipped from” option from the list of options shown to you.
  • When found, tap on it, and select the one that corresponds with your home country, such as “Shipped from Nigeria” for those in Nigeria, and that’s all.

Now having done this, there is just one last thing that we have to do, and that is;

  • Filtering products based on a seller’s score,
  • The number of successful sales they’ve had,
  • And the number of years they’ve spent while selling products using the Jumia platform.

Personally, I choose to buy from sellers who have at least up to 60 – 80%+ seller score, have up to 1000+ sales, and have stayed up to 3+ years on the platform.

So, let’s see how we can do this.

Step 4: Filtering products based on “seller score”.

To do this for those on a computer or desktop browser;

  • From those same options on the left side of your screen on a product listing page.
  • Keep scrolling down until you see the option that says “Seller score“.
  • From there, I’d advise you select the “60% or more” or “80% or more” options.

While for those using the mobile shopping app;

  • On a product listing or category page, tap on the filter button at the top of the page.
  • Keep scrolling down until you see the option that says “Seller score“.
  • And once again, it is advisable you either go for the “60% or more” or “80 or more” options.
Filtering products based on “Seller Score” on the Jumia mobile app.

And after you’ve done this, Jumia will first start showing you products with the best seller score, based on your selected range.

But it doesn’t end there, as you still have to check each seller’s profile individually to see how long they’ve been on the platform and the number of successful sales they’ve had.

This might seem tiring and time-consuming, but it’s better to spend that time and energy now than to not do so and end up being delivered a bad product which you’ll definitely end up regretting later.

And you don’t even need to do this for every single product on the page, you only have to do it for the ones that you’re interested in.

So, to check each individual seller’s details, all you have to do is;

  • Simply tap on a product that you’re interested in, which in turn will take you to the product description page, scroll down slowly until you see the option that says “SELLER INFORMATION“.
    • For those on a computer desktop browser, you can find this option from the list of options located at the right side of your computer’s screen on the product’s description page.
      How to order on Jumia
  • Tap on the seller name and a new page will open where you’ll all the seller’s list of product. This is not the page that we want to see, so tap on the seller’s name once again at the top of the page, and this time, you should see all the seller’s information.
    • For those on a desktop browser, simply on the “SEE PROFILE” option.
  • And from here, you can judge how genuine a seller is, based on their score, the number of years they’ve been selling on the Jumia platform, number of successful sales, their country of origin, and even “Order fulfilment rate“, “Quality score“, and overall “Customer Rating“.
  • And like I said before, I personally like to pass my judgement based on the following criteria;
    • Selling on Jumia: 2 – 3+ years.
    • Successful sales: 1,000+.
    • Order fulfillment rate: 100%.
    • Quality score: 80%+

Summary & conclusion

So in summary, let’s assume that I want to get a very good laptop from the Jumia online store, all I have to do is;

I first have to check if there’s an official store selling the laptop I want to buy by typing the name of the brand in the search area provided on the Jumia website or mobile app.

If there is, then it’s a good thing, I can simply just buy from the store without going through the other steps, but if there is none, then I have to go through them.

So, first of all, I have to go to the laptop category whether on my desktop browser or via the Jumia mobile app on my phone.

Next thing is to change the default product sorting to sort by “Product rating” on desktop, or “BEST RATING” on the mobile app.

After that, I have to make sure that I’m buying from a vendor that is in my home country, by filtering the products based on where they’re shipped from.

And after that, I have to make sure that I’m buying from a seller that has up to 60 – 80%+ seller score, has stayed up to two to three years on the platform, and has sold up to 1,000+ products on the platform.

And don’t forget to read lots of customer reviews for a product before placing your order and checking out, so you’d know what other customers are saying about the same product.

And that concludes it today on the 4 things you should take note of when next you order products on the Jumia online marketplace to avoid buying fake and low-quality products.

Now kindly share any experience you’ve had while shopping on Jumia by leaving a comment for us in the comments section below, and if you find this post helpful, kindly give it a thumbs up by sharing it, and as always, I’ll see y’all tomorrow, #peace out.
